How Do Diaphragm Pumps Work?

Diaphragm pumps transfer liquids through a process known as positive displacement. A diaphragm pump consists of two flexible diaphragms mounted on a center shaft with an air chamber on each side. As the shaft moves back and forth, an air vacuum is created inside the pump. Liquid is drawn into the first pump chamber by suction and then discharged (expelled) as the diaphragms swing backward, closing the chamber. At the same time, the second chamber expands, drawing in more liquid. When the pump is running, the two chambers fill and empty in an even, rhythmic alternating pattern. Diaphragm pumps are resistant to clogging and require no start-up, making them suitable for viscous liquids, liquids containing suspended solids, and variable flow applications.
